History

While this arena broke ground in July of 1988, it was officially opened in October of 1990. The original Timberwolves, built, owned, and operated the arena for the first five years of operation and the venue was eventually sold to the city of Minneapolis in 1995.

The city of Minneapolis deferred management to Ogden Entertainment after they acquired the facility. The Target Corporation eventually t purchased the naming rights of the arena and it will be called “Target Center” in August of 1990. Since then, they have renewed the naming rights every five years.

In 2004, Target Center underwent a substantial renovation that had a replacement of all 19,006 of the original seats on top of the addition of ~1,500 new seats. On top of the seating renovations, they reconfigured the lower bowl to make for a more fan-friendly experience. The final additions included removing the arena’s original scoreboard and replacing it with a new 9-by-16-foot video screen, added new signage on the upper deck facing, improved access for fans with disabilities, and a new Cambria club lounge,

In 2011, the city of Minneapolis introduced a $155 million proposal to renovate Target Center once again. Some of the features included a renovation that moved the main entrance to the corner of First Avenue and 6th Street and an overhaul of the interior.

Finally, in 2015, the Minneapolis City Council gave the go-ahead for the newly introduced renovation plans for the arena. The total cost was $140 million, the city contributed $74 million, the owner, Glen Taylor added $60 million, AEG put up $5.9 million. After all of these renovations, the Timberwolves extended their lease through 2035
